Until
a few years ago I had never heard the calling in my
life to venture towards the mission field and made no
attempt to really listen for such a calling. I held
tight to my reasons for avoiding missions, that is until
the Lord presented me with something better, the truth
and a passion for missions. What changed me was the
testimony of two young men. God spoke very strongly
through them straight to my heart. We have such an awesome
God who pursues us and speaks to us in ways he knows
we need to hear.
Tim
and Will from Travel the Road came to our church a few
years ago. When I first heard that two missionaries
had come to speak, I prepared myself for the typical
reciting of the great commission. Instead I found myself
on the edge of my chair, my spirit stirred, thirsting
for more of what Tim and Will were sharing. They came
and shared their hearts, they came as willing vessels
to be used by the Lord and I watched as the Spirit poured
through them. For the first time I saw Christ’s
heart of love behind the great commission and for the
first time I saw Christians my age with lives fully
committed to Christ, with a passion for him that I wanted.
I realized that I didn’t have to wait till I was
40 to speak with authority about the love of Christ.
I knew the spirit was prompting me, he wanted all of
me then and there and he had a road that he wanted me
to travel.
After
they finished speaking the Spirit in me seemed to shout
“Brooke this is what I have called you for, this
is how you are to live!” How those words scared
me, “God No, I’m scared to be in the dark
inside my house, with a security system, on gated property,
I can’t be a missionary!” Over the next
few months I sought the Lord, I spent long periods of
time on my knees asking for the courage to give myself
fully to him. I was so incredibly scared that he would
send me to the middle of Africa if I did say, “Yes,
God where you call I will go.” Yet the Lord continued
to soften my heart and strengthen me, finally about
four months later I relinquished all of my plans to
him. Over the next few months God began to lay on my
heart the plans for Refresh. Braced for a calling to
foreign lands God called me to the Internet.
I
share all of this with you because I want you to see
how our lives affect others yes, but also because I
want to endear you to the work of Tim and Will and the
others at Travel the Road. God is working so powerfully
through them to reach so many lost and hurting people.
Find out more about Travel the Road, pray for them and
if God leads you support them in accomplishing the calling
God has put on their lives to spread the gospel.

As well I encourage you to order the TV series they
have produced, I have found it to be a great ministry
tool to spark conversations with friends about God’s
calling on their lives. I encourage you to pray on a
consistent basis for Tim and Will from Travel the Road
as well as for other missionaries you know of. I devote
one day each week that I pray specifically for the missionaries
that either my family or I support. Most of all I encourage
you to know the path God has called you to and walk
purposefully down that road.
